Adam Taylor and Claudia Rees are the first 2016 Blue Chip champions

The first day of five at the Blue Chips championships – now celebrating its 25th anniversary year – started at 7am and produced two worthy champions.

Adam Taylor was the first Blue Chip champion of 2016, taking the HorseQuest novice title on Cedarmount Socks in the final draw of the 37-horse jump-off.

Adam has ridden the Irish-bred, Ferro sired eight-year-old, who has previously evented, for six months.

“Showjumping is his forte, he’s as careful as a cat,” he said.

Ruairidh Bothwell came within 0.13 sec for second place on the Cicero Z/Freuhlingsball five-year-old Lord Gold with Chloe Heydon in third on Jana Van T Lozerhof, a Contact Van De Heffinck/Acaletto seven-year-old mare.

Claudia Rees claimed the rug and sash of honour in the Blue Chip Joint RLF power championship with Renkum Knopfler, a nine-year-old bought from Renkum Stud as an unbroken three-year-old.

“He’s done very little as I went to University and we only started jumping regularly in the last 18 months,” said Claudia, who studied politics and now works as a sales manager at a stem cell bank.

Holly Broad took second on the Vigaro/Phin Phin five-year-old Mannie II with third going to Mark Thompson on the eight-year-old Indoctro mare Double Dutch CKV.
