Robert Whitaker is the big winner in Spain

Robert Whitaker pulled off the big one on the final day of the Spanish sunshine tour, winning the Invitational 1.60m 4* grand prix with the 13-year-old Holsteiner Colman/Corleone gelding Catwalk IV.

Only seven from a quality field of 60 produced round one clears over a tough track, and only four posted treble clears, with Robert proving 0.62 sec faster than his nearest Belgian rival, Jerome Guery on Grand Cru Van De Rozenberg.

Britain’s Tim Wilks put in a great performance on the former Michael Whitaker ride Quelbora Merze to take fourth.

British-based Swede Angelie von Essen slotted Newton Abbot into sixth and Ireland’s Billy Twomey on Lizziemary – produced by Emma-Jo Slater before joining Billy – took 11th with Spencer Roe 12th on Belcanto Z.

And in the ladies 1.40m it was British girls on top! The Brits filled the top five places with Kayleigh Watts topping the lot on Winde by an impressive 1.44 sec. Morgan Kent brought Remi Delux into second with Kerry Brennan on Dynamic III, Leonie Aitkenhead fourth on Clane K and Louise Whitaker fifth with Udget Du Rozel. Six riders produced treble clears in the 10-strong jump-off.

Alice Palmer and Fanadwest Dancer took seventh in the Classic tour Invitational 1.40m with Sarah Lewis on Doonaveeragh Emma in 12th and Chloe Breen in 15th on Zidane VIII.
